ALBA II Layout Map

ALBA has started planning, designing, prototyping its evolution towards ALBA II, the 4th generation brighter light source, while operating at full speed the existing instruments and completing those in construction.

ALBA II will make ALBA fit for the characterization challenges our user community will face in future. It is including an upgrade of the accelerator complex, completing our instrumentation portfolio, upgrading the existing beamlines and, last but not least, integrating support infrastructures like specialized laboratory capabilities, automatic data pipelines and connectivity to the big data world.

General information, how we will define the mission and the approach of ALBA II, can be found at this webpage containing a list of links, including: colloquia and workshops held during the last year for discussing the scientific case; presentations done during the AUSE and ALBA Users' Meeting on 8 September 2022; technical information, updates on the planning and deciding process, and obviously project updates.

This long process has started already with developing enabling technologies and with defining the project itself together with our user community and all stakeholders. We are still securing the funding of the full project, and in the meantime preparing to be ready as soon as new funding opportunities arise, mainly by defining the new instruments.

This is why we are asking again the user community for scientific cases of the four possible long beamlines. These unique beamlines will be fully benefitting from the improved ALBA II beam properties and its large source sample distance, and will significantly extend ALBA's imaging and microscopy capabilities. The integration of their end stations in a new building located adjacent to the current plot of ALBA brings additional opportunities to build multiple end stations on one beamline and in addition integrate highly specialized instruments with specific sample environments. The definition of these instruments is the subject of this call which address the user community.

We open the call to all members of the community, including the national and international community which is allowed by Spanish law to collaborate with Spanish research institutions. Each proposal team must include at least one Spanish institution.

We highly encourage the community to consider possible partnerships to finance and contribute to the future operation of the instruments and its environments, which would imply special access according to the level of the co-funding contribution.
