Description

Abstract

Obsidian Advanced manufacturing, a spin -off from Yale University has been pioneering a plasma based 3D  printing process which does not require powders or laser sintering. This technique can be used on standard rod or wire based feedstock material and allows the possiblity of printing both metals and ceramics 'in-situ'. The talk will give a brief overview of the technique and then we will discuss some aspects of the current collaboration with Brookhaven National Lab (funded by the US Department of Energy ) on producing 3D printed meta-material filters for applications in the THz regime. The platform currently being built focuses on high precision metal printing as well as the ability to combine dielectrics with metal components. We will end with a discussion of the roadmap ahead, potential collaborations and some of the challenges faced by hardware startup companies.
