Description

The EP meets LEAPS event

LEAPS, the League of European Accelerator-based Photon Sources (https://leaps-initiative.eu) is a strategic research consortium representing thirteen Synchrotron (SR) and six Free Electron Laser (FEL) Research Infrastructures (RIs) in Europe. Its primary goal is to guarantee and promote quality as well as impact of fundamental, applied and industrial research for the benefit of European science and society.

In May 2022 LEAPS presented the European Strategy for Accelerator-based Photon Sources 2022 - ESAPS2022 which consists of a new RI strategy document which will enable Europe to cope with the Global Challenges and which should be integrated in the new European Research Area to help it become both a reality and a success.

In view of the successful implementation of ESAPS2022, LEAPS started the process of founding a non-profit Association in 2023 and will be ready by next year to engage further with other European Partnerships related to the LEAPS research focal areas, such as discovery of Advanced Materials for Circular Economy and Health. LEAPS already offers world-class facilities but to keep at the forefront of global European competitivity has developed a comprehensive and very clear roadmap of the technologies in view of quality and excellent science which need to be developed to tackle the Global Challenges. These critical perpectives will be discussed during this event. The next generation of accelerator-based photon sources will boost the analytical capabilities of the European RIs and consequently the services provided to thousands of academic and industrial researchers to increase the competitiveness and the technological sovereignty of Europe.

Facing the present Global Challenges requires more than state-of-the-art technologies. LEAPS also develops a holistic approach to excellence in research and innovation through building networks and strategic partnerships through actions such as Training and Education towards the creation of talent with a focus on promoting equal opportunities for all, and Science Diplomacy by reaching out to Ukrainian scientists and new research communities in African regions. These views and related activities will also be presented and discussed during the event.

The event will give a glimpse into the innovation ecosystem for RIs, in which Member States and RIs have a central role and aims to open a dialogue on how this model can work for the benefit of researchers and innovators across Europe.
