Description

Roberto Visintini, Removal & Installation Leader of Elettra 2.0

The construction of a new 4th generation, high brilliance, light source is a challenge involving the whole Facility: tight requirements are given to Infrastructure, to Machine, and to Beamlines; Procurement Office has to manage a great number of procurement procedures, often for highly specialized components available only in foreign countries; the Project Management requires close support from Planning, Administration, and HR. In addition, logistics and materials-handling staff are put under considerable strain by the volume of material they have to manage and store, whilst crane operators and other staff have to handle delicate yet bulky and/or heavy components in very confined spaces, with a margin for error of just a few millimeters...
Upgrading a 3rd generation light source adds to the above the complication of having to manage a much larger quantity of material simultaneously, along with the additional issues related to its disposal (which often presents an opportunity to derive economic benefit) or - in the case of potentially activated parts - its temporary storage pending the inspections required by law.
In the seminar, I will describe the experience we are currently going through at Elettra
